Oh Freedom Where Art Thou

This morning the Supreme Court announced their decision to uphold the Health Care law as a mandated tax. This is the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v Wade, and the battle has just begun (read my statement on Pro-Life Secular). . .

The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops has called on the faithful to participate in the Fortnight for Freedom that began June 21 and goes until July 4. This is the largest organized act in opposition to government by the Catholic Church in the United States since its founding. Faithful are being called on to stand for religious freedom, particularly in light of the HHS mandate of contraception, sterilization, and abortion inducing drugs. While there is an exception for churches, there is not an exception for religious institutions or people of conscience. (More info below on how to participate in the Fortnight for Freedom.)

For the kick off of the Fortnight for Freedom I was in Aspen, Colorado on an Eagle Eye Retreat by the Community of Saint John. The 25+ young adults along with 5 religious (two priests, two brothers, and a nun) took a four hour pilgrimage hiking up into the mountains in the dark as we prayed the Stations of the Cross. We began at dusk lead by those carrying a cross showered in light to guide the way.

As we began our pilgrimage Father Nathan Cromly reminded us that as Americans have the freedom to participate in activities like Stations of the Cross in a public area. In places like China and Iraq you could be imprisoned or killed for a much lesser act of faith. As we journeyed late into the night lead by the cross we were reminded to never loose hope as the cross lead us in the darkness up the mountain.

As we reached the summit and looked down into the valley Father Nathan encouraged us to be hopeful and stand strong no matter what we face tomorrow in the Church and in America because we all know in the end the Church will prevail.

With this hope in mind, and lead by the cross I encourage you participate in this last week of the Fortnight for Freedom. If you believe in the freedom of America, the protection of conscience, and the ability to practice your faith then I challenge you to trust in God and take action as our religious liberties are being assaulted:

  1. Pray
  2. Fast
  3. Study
  4. Participate in Fortnight Events near you
  5. Contact your Representatives

"It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."

~ Deuteronomy 31:8 ~
